Eco-Challenge is the ultimate expedition race in which international teams of adventure athletes will race non-stop, 24 hours a day, across hundreds of miles of rugged backcountry terrain complete with mountains, jungles and oceans. Each team is comprised of a racing team of four competitors and must include at least one member of the opposite sex, plus one assistant crew member. The race will encompass a variety of non-motorized forms of transportation including outrigger paddling, mountain biking, rappelling, climbing, whitewater rafting, pack rafting and paddle boarding. Navigation must be done with map and compass only and teams will be required to use expedition problem-solving skills in their quest for the finish line.

The first team to complete the entire course and cross the finish line will be the winner. If a team loses a member along the way, whether due to injury, exhaustion or disagreement, they will be disqualified. Only teams that can work together under extreme stress and fatigue have any hope of reaching the finish.

Eco-Challenge Fiji is true expedition racing, where adventure meets sport. As our host nation, Fiji will deliver stunning terrain including volcanic cliffs, remote villages and turquoise seas … but it will also provide seemingly impenetrable barriers of dense jungle, rushing rivers, narrow canyons and coral reefs. This will be a life changing experience and more than you could ever have expected!

Fiji is a rugged volcanic land with dense jungles surrounded by the Pacific Ocean. Much of the country is uninhabited and remote. Villages maintain an ancient South Pacific tribal value system governed by local chiefs; it is a land rich in culture and tradition.

Fiji is both a paradise and a fascinating study in contrasts. Azure blue waters crash against white sand beaches. Dense jungle flourishes in the shadow of black volcanic rock. The descendants of cannibals and fierce warlords are now gracious hosts.

Everywhere the mix of old and new, fact and fable, reef and rainforest, sky and sea casts a spell upon the islands. Your team will mountain bike remote trails to towering waterfalls, paddle down white water rivers, negotiate narrow gorges, navigate and trek over mountain ranges and highlands, bushwhack through intense jungles to remote villages. The course will demand skilled team decision making by incorporating navigational changes and expedition problem solving.

As a fan of Eco-Challenge from the beginning – I was always struck by the phenomenal athletes that participate. You are a passionate, determined and resilient group of extraordinary human beings, hungry for whatever challenges and hardships are thrown your way. I couldn’t be any more excited to be part of this journey with you. See you at the starting line in Fiji.

Twenty-four years ago, I created Eco-Challenge. It started my career, gave me my first Emmy Award and taught me that in the remote wilds of nature you will truly learn who you are… Suffering requires perseverance, which creates character, which gives hope.

For every competitor rappelling down a 400-foot waterfall, there is a cameraman dangling from a rope whose job it is to get the shot. Over twenty crews, using state of the art gear, will travel the course 24 hours a day, for the entirety of the race – just like the competitors they are following. They are there to capture the race so that all the world can view the human drama in the TV series on Amazon Prime Video. Eco-Challenge is produced by MGM Television and will debut on Amazon Prime Video.
